I started making money online as an affiliate marketer back in late 1999/early 2000. I made a tiny bit of money from it.
Years later, I freelanced as a graphic designer. I created custom eBay templates for sellers and did custom work for people who used to run large websites that offered free Myspace layouts. Is Myspace even a thing anymore?
During the summer of 2018, I started poking around Upwork. The site used to be called oDesk awhile back. I researched Upwork on Google to see what others thought about the site. I was satisfied with what I found and set up a new account. I then took some time to type up an Upwork profile (I have since updated the profile multiple times). I had read somewhere online that Upwork wasn’t accepting all profiles anymore. They were being more picky. I had read complaints from would-be Upworkers because their profiles were rejected. Oddly enough, my profile was accepted the first time around. I thought it was a sign of good things to come.
Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. I upgraded my account so that I would have plenty of “connects”. It only costs $10 a month. The connects are used to send proposals to potential clients who have placed jobs on Upwork. I have sent a lot of proposals and have only been hired by 4 different people. Granted, they are satisfied with my work. I have also had a handful of private invites to interview and one direct job offer. Unfortunately, I didn’t accept the invites or job offer because I wasn’t qualified based off of what I read in the job descriptions. I didn’t want to waste the clients’ time or mine.
The silver lining in all this is that Upwork invited me to join their “Rising Talent” program. They said I’ve been doing a good job. Not sure how they would figure that out from my 4 jobs on Upwork. But the program is supposed to help newbies like me gain more exposure. All I had to do was take and pass the Upwork Readiness test. I did and passed without a problem. So now I have the “Rising Talent” badge on my profile. Supposedly, it helps me be more qualified for some of the jobs. I just got the badge last week, so we’ll see how it goes.
